So did Smarf actually press the button or not? It's kind of bugging me. (Something tells me Jake Weatherman has an opinion on this.)

I think he did, which allowed the universe to re-sort itself so the episode could start. The axe man got placed where he belonged and stasis was temporarily achieved.
